Windfall to Land Owners?

Landowners may lease their land for gas exploration  in exchange for royalties for gas removed from their  property and sold on the commercial market. As of  July 2008, land owners are being paid  approximately $2K-$3K per acre for a five-year lease interest. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania  mandates that landowners receive a minimum of  12.5 percent in royalty payments for gas sold  commercially, and the rate can be negotiated to a  higher amount.
